“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.” – Hebrews 12:1-4 ESV, emphasis mine
Therefore. Because. Since.
Words that instruct us to look back so we can ultimately go forward. Maybe words for the wise, rooted in faith?
I like the astute tone of the word therefore. It ushers me deeper, calls me farther, beckons me beyond the here and now.
Looking at Paul’s therefore Hebrews 12, we’re reminded of the fathers of faith that came before us and whose testimonies bear witness to the same grace at work in our lives today.
From this perspective, we can now make the clear shift to sharpen our own resolves; to run the race set before us with endurance, clinging to Jesus who is the author and perfecter of our faith.
“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”- Isaiah 4-:28-31 NIV
Friends, today is the day to declare our Therefore!
Jesus’ return is imminent. If your heart has received the message of the gospel; if you have been transformed by the grace of God through Christ Jesus’ sacrifice on the Cross, then grab hold of your Therefore.
Wave it strong and proud, while laying aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely...and run the race! The prize lies up ahead. He who has promised these things is faithful.
Be blessed, Friends. The Lord is mighty, present, and actively engaged in the battles we walk through. He’s already overcome, and so therefore we walk in victory!
